Business With An Arts Handshake
25 March 2011This year, Spotlight Singapore in Cape Town put on a show. Iskandar Ismail composed a 50-minute musical entitled Selamat that brought together South African and Singaporean musicians and singers; and anthology of Singaporean prose and poetry was launched and Singapore chefs cooked up favourites such as laksa and kueh pie tee... and the courting seems to be paid off on the South African side.
Guy Lundy, the CEO of Accelerate Cape Town which promotes South African trade with other markets, found Spotlight Singapore's format more sincere than most other business delegations..."This is different because it's not just about business. It's also about the similarities between the two places..."

The arts and culture programme will feature three Cultural Medallion recipients in its arts and culture component: poet and academic Edwin Thumboo; composer, arranger and conductor Iskandar Ismail; writer, musician and lyricist Isa Kamari. The event will also see the world premiere of a new work, Selamat by Iskandar Ismail set to poetry of Edwin Thumboo, one of the few occasions when the art of Cultural Medallion recipients come together. Spotlight Singapore in Cape Town will also see the launch a new anthology of Singapore writing for South Africa, commemorating the occasion.
The business programme will include industry tours and breakout sessions, networking sessions with government officials and key industry decision makers, and most importantly, business-networking sessions that are catered according to your business development needs. Delegates can expect the participation of major South African corporations as a result of collaboration with major Cape Town agencies such as Wesgro and Accelerate Cape Town.
The learning component looks towards developing a learning environment to understand better tourism, culture and business opportunities in South Africa and also potential areas of research. It will engage Singapore students to undertake a business competition that will stimulate creative thinking and develop their analytical skills. Students will also learn the art of business networking, and attain new knowledge in their interaction with business delegates from both cities.
